Structures of the sheathed flagellum reveal mechanisms of assembly and rotation in Vibrio cholerae

Sarah Zhang is selected for the JHJ Prize in Chemistry for her contributions to molecular and structural bioscience through a study of the sheathed flagellum in Vibrio cholerae. Using cryo-electron microscopy, fluorescence microscopy, and molecular genetics, she revealed near-atomic structures, identified key roles of flagellin proteins, and uncovered mechanisms of filament assembly and rotation, published in Nature Microbiology.
